The most important question

by laagan on Nov.08, 2009, under Seryoso, random thoughts

I transferred to a new company last month. This entailed a higher salary, better benefits and less stress although it meant having to content with an entry level position. I was desperate to leave my previous company that it really did not take a lot of time for me to decide to take the offer.

Two weeks ago, I met one of my former officemates and was asked about my position in the current company. I was irked by the malicious smile on his face for I am pretty sure he knew all the while that I was demoted. My initial reaction was to evade the question; however I realized that I should give him a straight answer as I knew beforehand that a number of people thought that my decision was stupid and a career suicide.

I called one of my friends to just let go of my frustration because it hit me that I may be too egoistic to face these kind comments gracefully. She told me that she is sure that if given the chance; my former officemate will trade places with me any time. Well, that was a little bit comforting.

However, I was still so frustrated that the very next day, I called another friend to relate the same story. All he asked me was “Are you happy?” and I realized that without any qualms the answer was “Yes” and nothing else matters.

Humanity in the face of a terrible tradegy

by laagan on Oct.09, 2009, under Seryoso

To help counter Ondoy’s wrath, the organization I belong to as well as other Filipino communities in Abu Dhabi did not waste any time to lend a helping hand. We organized a fund drive to ask for cash donations to alleviate the plight of Ondoy’s victims. As always, with a sense of Bayanihan, the Filipino community heeded the call. My organization raised and donated to the Philippine Red Cross more than a hundred thousand pesos (Php 100,000.00).

During this time of need, we tend to learn more about the characters of the people who surround us. For one, I am part of a profession whose people are considerably well paid compared to the majority of expatriates in the UAE. I was confident that from my friends alone I will be able to collect a good amount of money and I was not disappointed as more than 50% of the total collection came from them.

However, I have a better story to tell.

A Bangladeshi office boy of one of my co-officer noticed the envelope that was passed around their office. Upon learning that the envelope was donation for Ondoy’s victims; the Bangladeshi and another Sri Lankan office boy offered to give five (5) dirham each, equivalent to about sixty (Php60) pesos. My co-officer did not want to take their money but they insisted.

But why was this gesture so great?

An office boy’s salary would only amount to approximately three hundred (300) dirham a month and five (5) dirham is a whole day worth of food.

I could not help but get goosebumps when I heard the story. I remembered how happy our office boys were for the few dirhams I give away as tips whenever they buy food for me.

The generosity of the Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan office boys was enough to convince me that people had not stopped becoming humane. They made me forget those well paid officemates who did not even bother to donate a single centavo.

I hope and pray for God’s blessing to those who are generous enough to share their resources to those who need them the most.

LP: Kandado

by laagan on Jul.01, 2009, under litratong pinoy

Finding my mojo

by laagan on May.17, 2009, under Seryoso, random thoughts

I have recently felt so let down with the consistent disappointments that came my way; one after another. I have a very low EQ, so these episodes were quiet bad for me. I have tried maintaining a positive attitude but there are definitely times in which I just let my emotion consume me against my better judgment. Good thing, I have discovered that I can shift my emotion by counting my blessings. I had enough of my mulling over uncontrollable circumstances and have resolved to start working on having a positive outlook again.

I mean, how can I complain about certain things when I have been so blessed in so many ways?

Today, I again realized that God has His own timeline. God is probably just teaching me to be patient to make everything sweeter when I finally get the answers to my prayers.

I hope you have the time to watch this video.

Randy Pausch was a professor at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). He had pancreatic cancer and died in July 2008. He got famous in Youtube when he gave a lecture entitled “The last lecture: Really achieving your childhood dreams” in September 2007. He also co wrote a book entitled “The Last Lecture”. I hope you guys have the chance to read it and be amazed on how this guy was still so upbeat despite of the odds being against him.

1st Photo Workshop - Model: Anastasia

by laagan on May.12, 2009, under Photoblog

Anastasia was the first model to come out for the photoshoot. Sad to say she was not very graceful and did not pose very well. I have wasted a lot of my limited time trying to get decent shots.

Photoshop manipulations were limited to tagging of “laagansagayud.com”.

I know I could have improved these photos had I used photoshop more. But blame it on laziness and lack of knowledge. :-)
